A/R/: Online ride-hailing drivers warn of strike over security issues

Online ride-hailing drivers in the Ashanti Region are threatening to go on strike if urgent steps are not taken to address rising safety concerns and the increasing commissions deducted by ride-hailing platforms.

The drivers say they face daily risks, including violent attacks by individuals who pose as passengers.

Many have lost their vehicles, personal belongings, and in some tragic cases, even their lives.

Seth Oppong, Deputy Regional Secretary of the drivers’ association, shared some of the harrowing experiences his colleagues have endured.

“Just two months ago, a colleague was attacked in Barekese. He was robbed of his phones, and his car was taken. The car still hasn’t been found. Another driver was murdered around Kuntenase. It’s becoming terrifying,” he said.

According to the drivers, the safety features on the ride-hailing apps are inadequate.

While drivers are required to upload personal identification like the Ghana Card, they claim passengers are not held to the same standard.

This lack of verification, they argue, makes them vulnerable to criminals.

They are calling for mandatory identity verification for riders and a direct emergency alert system in the apps that connects to the police.

Adding to their frustration is the commission structure, which they say has risen from 10% to as much as 28% per ride. Many claim this makes it difficult to break even, especially with rising fuel and maintenance costs.

The group has issued a one-week deadline for their concerns to be addressed.

If not, they warn, they’ll withdraw their services indefinitely, which could impact transport across Kumasi and surrounding areas.
