The Ashanti Regional Director of the National Service Scheme (NSS), Alex Opoku-Mensah, has been suspended.
This follows the recommendations of a committee of inquiry tasked to probe the verbal assault allegations against Mr Opoku-Mensah meted out on a Manhyia hospital nurse.
A letter communicating the suspension said the NSS Ashanti Regional Director had been suspended for two months without pay.
After the two months, he is expected to report to the head office of the secretariat to work under supervision.
He has also been directed to issue an official apology to the National Service Scheme (NSS) within seven days upon receipt of the letter for bringing the institution’s name into disrepute.
The directive captured in a letter dated December 23, 2022, said the order takes immediate effect.
Mr Opoku-Mensah was captured on tape hurling unprintable words at a female nurse at the Manhyia Hospital for undermining the authority of his daughter, a doctor who also works at the said hospital.
Running to the defence of his daughter, the director in question barged into the hospital’s surgical ward and verbally abused and threatened the nurse.
In the audio, the angry NSS director is heard questioning the nurse’s competence and further threatening to get her fired from her post.
Earlier, he was suspended when the issue first came to light to allow for the committee’s investigation.
Apology by NSS Ashanti Regional Director
The director who has come under the limelight for the wrong reasons has since apologised for his misconduct.
In a Facebook post, Mr Opoku-Mensah said the modus operandi he employed in handling the friction between his daughter, a doctor, and the nurse has never been his style.
“I understand the disappointment and appreciate the inconvenience my action has caused the general public and the Nursing FRATERNITY and Manhyia Hospital.
“This has never been my style, but for a genuine reason to mediate a persistent issue between my daughter(Doctor) and a colleague nurse who I as well consider my daughter.
“I do apologise for any mishap and assure all. There shall not be a repetition of such. I look forward to maintaining a cordial relationship with any affected person,” he said in a post.
