A/R: 6 dead, 4 rescued following collapse of galamsey pit

A galamsey pit that collapsed in Kasotie in the Atwima Mponua District of the Ashanti Region has claimed the lives of six illegal miners, with four others being rescued from the heartbreaking incident.

The unfortunate incident occurred on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, trapping several miners underground.

This incident was confirmed by the Assembly Member for the Kasotie Electoral Area, Samuel Ayine.

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), in collaboration with emergency services and local volunteers, are still searching for others in the pit as more people are feared trapped.

After several hours of digging through rubble, rescue teams recovered the bodies of the six deceased miners.

Four others were rescued alive and rushed to the hospital for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased have been sent to the mortuary.

Despite efforts to rescue others in the pit on time, water gushing from the ground made that impossible.

Meanwhile, the rescue team are hopeful of pulling out the rest by the close of today.

This comes after three people were also confirmed dead, while four others were rescued after being trapped in an abandoned mining pit located in Twifo-Mampong, within the Twifo Atti-Mokwa District in the Central Region.

It is reported that the victims, predominantly young men, had entered the site secretly, which had been inactive for nearly five years since the closure of a Chinese mining company’s operations.

This unfortunate incident was confirmed by the District Chief Executive (DCE), Isaac Yawson, in an interview.

According to him, the bodies of the deceased were transferred to the Twifo Praso mortuary for autopsy and further investigation.
