EC cautions public against fake social media recruitment scams

The Electoral Commission (EC)  has advised the public to ignore all social media pages bearing its name and logo which has not been verified.

Ahead of the December 7 polls, several social media pages have popped up, some announcing recruitments for the EC for the general elections.

The EC’s official pages are verified across social media pages, including Facebook and Twitter, and the public has been entreated to note official channels of communication.

Notable among the fake pages is one bearing the name “Dec 7, 2020 Recruitment – EC” which has over 10,000 followers on Facebook.

The page is sponsored to have its posts reach a wider audience and bears the old and new logos of the EC.

Despite claiming to be an EC page, the Facebook ID is @ecakasanoma and described as a Personal Blog.

It also has a personalised email (akasanomainfocenter@gmail.com) instead of an official address.

EC Chair, Mrs Jean Mensa described it outrightly as “fake” in a disclaimer to theghanareport.com
At least three other fake pages have also been flagged as imposters.

Other scams

Social media has been inundated with several recruitment scams, especially into the countries security services.

The Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), the Ghana Prisons Service and Customs Division have not escaped tricksters.

The modus operandi of the operators involves a promise of securing job placements in exchange for money.

Unsuspecting individuals desperate to secure jobs end up parting away with significant cash usually via mobile money with the faceless scammers smiling to the bank.
