My work will speak for me – Ursula Owusu-Ekuful files nominations
The New Patriotic Party Parliamentary candidate for Ablekuma West, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, says her work in the constituency will speak for her on December 7.
After two-terms in office, the vocal lawmaker believes her constituents have seen her track record to give her the nod for a third.
Buoyed by the hundreds of party supporters who followed her to file her nominations at the Ablekuma West Municipal Electoral Commission Office in Accra, the MP who is also the Communications Minister observed that 2020 was a done deal.
Addressing enthusiastic party supporters after presenting her forms at the Electoral Commission office, Mrs Owusu-Ekuful vowed to retain the seat for the governing NPP by hugely defeating the National Democratic Congress’ candidate.
“Four more years for more infrastructure, four more for more jobs, skills and training, four more for more of everything that’s on the hearts of these people because they know me, they have trusted me, they have tried me and I have proven myself over the years.”
The gender advocate, and a former President of the International Federation of Women Lawyers-Ghana, entered Parliament in 2012.
That year, she beat her National Democratic Congress (NDC) contender, Victoria Hamah by 10, 822 votes.
In 2016, the year in which her party chairman, Theophilus Nii Ayerkwei Tettey, went independent, she stretched her victory margin by 13,430 ballots to beat her NDC challenger, Gifty Obenewa Twum.
Expressing confidence that the people of Ablekuma West will return her to parliament as their MP, Mrs Owusu-Ekuful noted that her constituents knows she was seeking power to serve not to lord it over them.
“We are always with them; we know what their issues are,” she said.
Under her tenure, the constituency has seen numerous infrastructure development including uplifting 25 kilometres of asphalt, which is still ongoing, as well as Western Link Road construction, expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Apart from awarding scholarships to brilliant but needy constituents, she also gave loans to more than 5000 people to support their businesses.
“Those who want work-and-pay taxis they received some, jobs and skills training opportunities have been made available to our people here who need it, scholarships have been given”, she stated.
“Even in addition to the free SHS, we are still providing scholarships for tertiary students and our primary students. That’s always on-going and the list is endless,” she stated to massive cheers from the crowd,” she said.
There is more to come, she said as she woos constituents who had been faithful to the NPP ever since the constituency was created out of the Ablekuma South Constituency in 2012.
“Health infrastructures are being built in the constituency, police stations are being constructed and a courthouse is being built…even this assembly premises we are standing in today wasn’t here four years ago.
“It was Ursula Owusu Ekuful who lobbied for us to have our municipal assembly and procure this premise for them and this is where we are today. There is no way we are going to work this hard and leave it to someone else to come and occupy,” she added to cheers from her cheerful supporters.
