The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Kofi Adu Domfeh, has urged journalists to uphold accuracy, credibility and ethical standards as artificial intelligence (AI) increasingly influences the media industry.
Speaking at the Ashanti Media Excellence Awards 2026 on Saturday, October 24, he warned that although AI offers opportunities for research and storytelling, it also increases the risk of misinformation through fake images, manipulated videos and fabricated audio.
“AI can generate content, but journalists must provide verification, context, judgement and accountability,” he said, urging media practitioners to prioritise public interest over clicks, views and online popularity.
“Our greatest asset is not how quickly we publish, how many followers we command or how widely our stories circulate. It is whether the public can trust us,” he said.
Mr Adu Domfeh also commended the Owass FM team for demonstrating sensitivity and professionalism in its coverage of the circumstances surrounding the death of actor and media personality Kwame Dzokoto.
“Speed may win attention, but professionalism earns trust,” he said, cautioning journalists against allowing competition for online attention to undermine responsible reporting.
He encouraged journalists in the Ashanti Region to investigate critical issues, hold public officials accountable and amplify neglected voices, particularly on illegal mining, environmental degradation, unemployment, public health and governance.
On the Association’s development plans, he announced that the Ashanti Regional Branch had received a waiver on the land allocated by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for the proposed Ashanti Press Centre.
He thanked the Asantehene, Access Bank Ghana and Fidelity Bank Ghana for their support and appealed for additional funding to facilitate construction.
Mr Adu Domfeh further called for greater recognition of veteran journalists and urged younger practitioners to measure success through integrity, service and impact rather than popularity alone.
He reaffirmed the GJA’s commitment to ethical journalism, members’ welfare and professional development.
