A man believed to be in his 30s has died after allegedly attempting to steal metal components from a Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) substation in Tamale.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, October 24, and disrupted electricity supply to parts of the Tamale Business District.
NEDCo’s Northern Area Engineer, David Quarshie Doe, said the company was alerted after a major power line supplying the town went off.
SSpeaking in an interview monitored by The Ghana Report on Citi News, Mr Doe disclosed that the police had also reported hearing a loud noise from the substation’s control room shortly before the power outage.
He said NEDCo personnel were subsequently dispatched to the facility to investigate, where they found the man lying inside the control room with visible signs of electrocution.
A further inspection reportedly revealed that some components of the substation’s equipment had been removed and placed in a bag, raising suspicions that the deceased had entered the facility in an attempt to steal them.
The incident affected electricity supply to parts of the central business district, prompting NEDCo to work towards restoring power to the affected areas.
Police have since conveyed the body to the morgue at the Tamale Teaching Hospital.
