GH₵500,000 stolen in madrush for cash as bullion van crash kills one
There was a madrush to steal GH¢700,000 cash carried in a bullion van after it crashed in Ho, the Volta regional capital.
The bullion van carrying GH¢710,000.00, belonged to Agate Dabot company and was accompanied by a police officer and a cashier.
But while on the Hohoe-Fodome road, the driver crashed into a motorbike rider, killing him instantly, the GNA has reported.
Onlookers who witnessed the accident, in a frenzy state pounced on the van, scrambling for the scattered cash.
Only GH¢218,232 was retrieved by authorities after the scramble.
The Commander of the Hohoe MTTD, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Obeng Dickson said the GH¢710,000.00 was to be transferred from Ho to the Hohoe branch of Fidelity Bank.
Explaining how the accident happened, ASP Obeng Dickson, said the driver of the van in an attempt to avoid knocking down the motor rider swerved, causing the van to somersault several times.
“The motor rider was knocked off his bike on the Hohoe-Fodome road in the Volta Region. The 28-year-old rider, also a National Service Personnel was heading to Hohoe from the Gbi-Atabu stretch of the main road,” GNA reported.
Meanwhile, the driver of the bullion van and two others with him were treated and discharged.
According to the police, the driver, a cashier and a Police officer, were the only occupants of the van with registration number GN 7144–17.
ASP Obeng said a challenge facing the MTTD was lack of a vehicle to quickly respond to emergency cases within the Command.
He further advised riders and drivers to always observe traffic regulations and abide by all road safety protocols.
