Update: Female accomplice in lynching of 90-year-old woman nabbed

Latifa Bumaye, one  of the female accomplices in the lynching of 90-year-old, MariamaAkua Denteh, has been arrested.

Confirming the news to theghanareport.com, the  Savannah Regional Police Commander, DCOP Enoch Adutwum-Bediako said the 25-year-old was in the grips of the Domongo  police  command.

The younger woman among the two women, who subjected the nonagenarian to severe beatings, is seen in handcuffs.

In the video, that exposed the horrifying last moments of Madam Akua Denteh, two women were seen beating the frail old woman who they accused of being a witch. 

According to media reports, Akua Denteh was beaten for three consecutive days until her death.

The women went into hiding after the video went viral.

Police in the Savannah Region launched a search for the prime suspects and increased an initial GHC2,000 bounty to GHC7,000.

One of the suspects was apprehended  Friday, July 31.

Five other persons including the chief of Kafaba have been arrested in connection to the murder. Kafabawura Seidu Zakaria Yahaya was granted bail on Friday.

Background

A self-styled priestess accused Madam Denteh of witchcraft, claiming she was responsible for the woes of the town.

The priestess, who has been identified as Filina, led the gruesome murder of the frail 90-year-old in broad daylight to a cheerful crowd.

In a video that captured the heinous act, the old woman was seen pleading with her attackers to spare her life as she denied the accusations levelled against her.

The killing of Madam Denteh reignited calls for the collapse of witchcraft camps and campaign to educate the public on the fact that old age is not synonymous with witchcraft.
