In a viral video circulating on social media, a young woman is seen being assaulted for allegedly fornicating.
“Alhaji take your time, I will turn” she pleaded with her assaulter.
She stood in the midst of about 5 men who kept count of the lashes
“Turn yourself… 4 so that makes it 26, it left with 16” the scorekeeper said in Twi.
According to a video report, the young woman was caught in bed with her Sudanese partner ‘fornicating’, an act the leadership of the Ghanaian community there say they were against.
Reports say the Ghanaian leadership in Saudi Arabia had expressed concern over the lifestyle of some Ghanaian women which they claimed brought shame to the country.
The video of the lashing has since received condemnation on some sections of social media.
The lady is believed to receive not less than 100 lashes.
In pain and tears, she pleaded with the men to exercise patience during the act. But at least two male voices were heard, egging the man with a cane.
The legal system of Saudi Arabia is based on Sharia, Islamic law derived from the Qur’an and Sunnah, the traditions of Prophet Muhammad.
Criminal law punishments in Saudi Arabia include public beheading, stoning, amputation, and lashing. Serious criminal offenses include fornication, apostasy, adultery, witchcraft, and sorcery.
In addition to the regular police force, Saudi Arabia has a secret police, the religious police, or Mutawa which enforces Islamic social and moral norms.
