Commercial vehicles to load at full capacity as Gov’t lifts restrictions

From Monday, commercial vehicles and aircrafts can return to loading regular number of passengers, as the government eases COVID-19 restrictions that limited their intake. 

“In consultation with the Ministries of Transport and Aviation and the leadership of the transport operators, the government has taken the decision to lift restrictions in the transport sector.

“This will allow full capacity in our domestic airplanes, taxis, trotro and buses. The wearing of masks in vehicles and aircraft, and the maintenance of enhanced hygiene protocols remain mandatory,” President Akufo-Addo said in his 14th COVID-19 address.

In March, this year, the road transport operators announced some measures to avoid the spread of the deadly coronavirus and also adhere to the social distancing directive. 

The move adopted by the operators saw a change in the sitting arrangements in most public transports.

All passenger carrying-vehicles including taxis and trotro originally taking between 1-4 passengers reduced the number by one.

This arrangement, however, did not last long as drivers complained about the financial constraint this new directive was causing.

The complaints from the drivers led to the recent increase in transport fares by 15% in July.
