Over 2m Ghanaians issued with new voter card – EC reveals

The new voter registration exercise, which began on June 30, has met its target at the end of the first phase.

The Electoral Commission said more than two million Ghanaians have registered and been issued with their voter ID cards.

The election regulatory body made the announcement at a new event dubbed ‘Let the Citizens Know’ encounter on Wednesday.

“A total of 2,215,816 voters have been registered within the first phase, which is still ongoing,” the Deputy Chairperson in Charge of Electoral Services, Samuel Tettey, disclosed.

Explaining how the figures came about, the commission said, the data entry clerks at each registration centre were given a target of 100 registrations daily.

But most centres were registering as high as 280 per day, the commission explained.

Meanwhile, the electoral body has attributed the huge figure recorded to the efficiency of the registration officials and the machines provided for the exercise.

“The registration officials are very fast, skilful and have ensured a smooth process so far. The machines are equally robust, user-friendly and of high speed,” he indicated.

The Electoral Commission’s ‘Let the Citizens Know’ was launched on Monday.

The commission intends to update all concerned stakeholders and the general public on the ongoing new voter’s registration exercise.

This platform is also expected to address some of the concerns raised at the various registration centres in the country.
