Keta NDC demand accounts of GH¢166k meant for COVID-19 fight
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Keta Constituency of the Volta region has challenged its Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Godwin Yao Effah Edudzi, to disclose how over GH¢166,000 meant for the COVID-19 fight was disbursed.
According to the party, the administrator of the common fund, Irene Naa Torshie Lartey, in a letter dated April 9, 2020, released GH¢166,280.62 towards the fight against the novel coronavirus pandemic, but the people of the municipality are yet to benefit from that amount.
In a statement signed by the Constituency Communications Officer of the party, Albert Sosu Atsu, all health facilities in the area are ill-equipped hence, not prepared to contain the spread of the virus.
He, therefore, dares the MCE to account for how the said amount was utilised.
“Though the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Constituency, Mr Richard Quarshigah, and the parliamentary candidate, Kwame Dzidzorli Glakpe, have donated assorted PPE, hand sanitizers, veronica buckets and soaps worth over GH¢5,000 to health facilities in the municipalities, it was not enough for the whole municipality,” the statement said.
“We are calling for full accountability and investigation into the usage of the fund because this is not a normal time the country is in serious crisis,” it added.
The municipal hospital in the area recently received some donation from former President John Dramani Mahama. The items which included personal protective equipment were aimed at supporting in the fight against the pandemic which has so far claimed 16 lives in Ghana.
So far, 1,671 people have been infected with COVID-19, while 188 others have fully recovered. 16 people are dead from the contagious disease.
The Volta Region so far has 11 confirmed cases of coronavirus.
