Cristian “Cuti” Romero is set to become the next captain of Argentina following Lionel Messi’s expected departure from the national team.
Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has reportedly decided that the Atlético Madrid defender will take over the captaincy from Messi. Romero has also agreed to the decision, according to reports.
The 28-year-old defender has been part of Argentina’s senior team since 2021. He made his international debut on June 3, 2021, in a World Cup qualifier against Chile. He quickly became an important member of Scaloni’s defence.
Romero was part of the Argentina squad that won the 2021 Copa América, the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2024 Copa América. He also featured for Argentina at the 2026 World Cup.
His appointment would mark an important change for Argentina after Messi’s long spell as captain. Messi led the team to major international success, including the 2021 Copa América and the 2022 World Cup.
Romero has also entered a new chapter at club level after joining Atlético Madrid from Tottenham in 2026. The Spanish club describes him as an experienced defender with strong leadership qualities.
