Private burial arrangements for late TV3 Political Desk Editor announced
The late head of TV3’s Political Desk, Edward Kwabi Jnr., will be buried on May 2 at a private burial ceremony in Accra in adherence to the ban on social gathering to break the back of coronavirus spread.
Edward, who had a meteoric rise to become an Editor at Media General since he joined the company as a national service person in 2010, died on March 2 at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where he was on admission, receiving treatment for an undisclosed ailment.
Affectionately called Eddie among his peers and ‘The General’ in the Media General Newsroom, the respected broadcaster will be buried at the Osu Cemetery after a brief burial service at the Medical School Mortuary Chapel at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
A product of the Ghana Institute of Journalism, Mr Kwabi officially joined TV3 in 2012 and rose through the ranks to become the station’s Head of Political Desk last year.
However, the 32-year old had been unwell since September 2019.
He was a presidential correspondent during the Mahama administration and Secretary of the Presidential Press Corps.
Edward was part of the team of journalists involved in an accident near Tema while covering President Mahama in August 2015.
The father of three had not been the same since that accident, in which he got a serious fracture in the leg. He spent several months in the hospital seeking treatment.
In his most recent return to work, Edward was made a producer at TV3 and was not allowed to do any rigorous reporting duties.
He played various roles in the newsroom, including producing news bulletins and events and serving as the news anchor for TV3 late-night news, News@10.
In 2017, when the company underwent restructuring, Mr Kwabi was made an editor.
His colleagues described as ambitious but down-to-earth.
“Eddy was one of the most hardworking producers I have met; very passionate about his work and very ambitious. He was an excellent producer, especially of live events,” 3News quoted the GM’s General Manager in charge of News, Abraham Asare, as saying of his departed coworker.
Edward picked all his higher academic laurels at the nation’s premier communication university—the Ghana Institute of Journalism– where he was awarded a Diploma in 2010, a degree in 2014 and a master’s degree in Media Management in 2018.
Matilda Nana Prah-Takyi, one of his contemporaries at the university, had fond memories of the late Edward, who was also known among his GIJ classmates as “The Baobab tree”.
“Eddy was like a brother. He was easy to talk to. Kind, affectionate and one person you can count on for wise counsel. I’ll really miss him,” she said.
He left behind a wife, Mary Enyonam Kwabi, whom he has been married to since 2015. They have three children.
May he eternally rest in peace.
May God comfort and protect his wife and children.
