Black Stars coach signs two-year contract with FA

After four months in charge of the senior national team, the Black Stars, Charles Kwabla Akonnor, has officially signed a two-year contract with the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

Akonnor, who was appointed coach of the Black Stars in January this year, had been without an official contract.

But according to Kumasi based Fox FM, Akonnor has agreed to a two-year contract to lead the Black Stars with an expectation to qualify the team and win the African Cup of Nations trophy, which has eluded the team for the past 38 years.

Also, the former assistant to Kwesi Appiah is expected to qualify the team for the   Qatar World Cup in 2022.

Before his appointed Akonnor had been in charge Kumasi Asante Kotoko, where he guided the porcupine warriors into the group stage of the CAF Confederations Cup for the first time in a decade.

Akonnor, who is also a former skipper of the Black Stars, is reportedly the youngest man to take charge of the senior national team at 45.

He played alongside Abedi Pele and Tony Yeboah from 1991 and later rose to become skipper of the team in 1998 and retired in 2001.

As a coach, Akonnor headed Eleven Wise, Accra Hearts of Oak, Kumasi Asante Kotoko, AshantiGold FC and Dreams FC.
