The University of Ghana (UG) will make Artificial Intelligence (AI) training compulsory for all students from the next academic year as part of efforts to prepare graduates for an increasingly technology-driven world.
Prof. Isaac Wiafe of the Interaction Labs at UG’s Department of Information Technology announced this at the launch of the 2026 Achievers in Technology (AIT) Ghana Fellowship on Friday, September 4.
The event was held under the theme “Building Ghana’s Tech Workforce.”
He said the move reflects the growing importance of AI and the need for students to develop the knowledge and skills required to adapt to emerging technologies.
Prof. Wiafe, however, said universities should focus on providing students with strong foundational knowledge rather than training them specifically for individual companies.
“The university gives you the fundamental knowledge that prepares you to be smart. And then when you join an organisation, you learn the skills… starting next academic year, every University of Ghana student is supposed to do AI as compulsory because we know that that is the future.”
He said the gap between university training and industry demands should be addressed through programmes that give graduates practical, industry-specific skills after they complete their academic education.
Prof. Wiafe also called on universities to rethink traditional teaching and assessment methods in response to the growing use of AI.
He argued that educators should focus less on preventing students from using AI and more on adapting teaching methods to the technology.
“For those of us faculty and researchers, we should also change the way we are teaching. Change the way we are questioning students.”
