Real Madrid manager José Mourinho has backed Atlético Madrid to challenge for the La Liga title this season, saying Diego Simeone’s side should be considered among the leading contenders.
Mourinho made the comments on Thursday, September 3, 2026, during his press conference ahead of Real Madrid’s league meeting with Real Betis.
He rejected the idea that the title race would be limited to Real Madrid and Barcelona.
According to Mourinho, Atlético’s activity in the transfer market and their long-term stability under Simeone make them a serious threat in the title race.
“I think Atlético Madrid will also be there, also a contender. Even if they don’t openly say so, they surely think and feel they can,” Mourinho said.
He also pointed to the club’s decision to maintain Simeone as coach and keep the same football philosophy and organisational structure as important advantages in a competition where teams often undergo major changes.
“For me, they are also contenders,” Mourinho added.
Atlético have strengthened their squad during the current transfer window, bringing in players including Sporting midfielder Morten Hjulmand, former Bayer Leverkusen left-back Alejandro Grimaldo, South Korean star Kang-in Lee and defender Cristian Romero.
They have also added striker Jonathan David on loan, while Julián Álvarez has remained at the club.
Mourinho’s comments come as the 2026/27 La Liga season begins to take shape. Barcelona, the defending champions, have also made a strong start, while Real Madrid have opened their campaign with impressive victories, including a 4-0 win over Málaga.
Mourinho, however, warned that winning La Liga will not be easy because of the pressure on the top clubs to win almost every week.
“Here there’s this pressure week after week, where any result other than a win is not good,” he said.
Atlético will face Athletic Club on Saturday, September 5, in their next league fixture as they look to strengthen their title credentials.
