How farm decisions put Ghanaians at risk

Our farmers keep us alive. They grow the food, raise the chickens and stock the markets.

But have you ever asked yourself what actually goes on before that tilapia or chicken thigh lands on your plate?

Did it live in a clean pen?

Was it vaccinated?

Or did the farmer just dump cheap antibiotics into its feed to keep it standing?

It is not just a farming issue.

It affects every single one of us.

Imagine this: You are squeezing onto a crowded trotro on a Monday evening.

You scrape your arm on a jagged piece of metal.

Nothing major, just a tiny scratch.

You ignore it.

But by Wednesday morning, your arm is on fire.

It is swollen, throbbing and red.

You run to the clinic.

The doctor prescribes amoxicillin. Nothing happens.

They try ciprofloxacin. Still nothing.

The infection keeps spreading. You aren’t dealing with some crazy sci-fi super-germ.

You are suffering because a farm miles away has been abusing antibiotics for years.

This is antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

What is antimicrobial resistance?

AMR means germs have learned to shrug off our medicines.

Simple infections become lethal.

According to the WHO, AMR was tied to 23,000 deaths in Ghana in 2021.

Even worse, 1,500 of those deaths were babies under five.

These aren’t just abstract statistics.

They’re our children.

Go to any local market town.

You can buy tetracycline and amoxicillin over the counter like they’re candy.

No vet check needed.

Sure, some farmers treat sick animals, but many throw these medicines into the feed of perfectly healthy chickens and pigs just to fatten them up quick and protect their cash flow.

It’s a recipe for disaster.

When animals get low daily doses of antibiotics, the weak bacteria die off, but the strong ones survive.

They mutate.

They develop resistance genes and multiply.

And bacteria are not selfish.

They literally swap these genes with entirely different species of bacteria.

It’s like a computer virus emailing itself to every contact in the address book.

A harmless farm germ suddenly becomes a human killer.

Think you’re safe because you don’t eat meat?

Think again.

Manure is packed with resistant bugs and leftover drugs.

Studies in Ghana show these residues soak into our soil and water. When it rains, residues wash into the rivers.

Farmers then use this water to irrigate their vegetables.

So, when you enjoy your kontomire or tomatoes, you’re also consuming those leftover substances.

Some farmers even spray antibiotics directly on their crops.

It’s a cycle that nobody can escape.

However, we can stop it.

Ghana actually has a National Action Plan and a “One Health” framework, but policy on paper doesn’t clean a poultry coop.

Here is what farmers need to do right now:

First, clean up the coops.

Clean water, fresh air, and tidy pens keep animals healthy without drugs.

Second, vaccinate. Vaccines build real immunity. It’s way safer than daily dosing.

Third, stop guessing. Bring in a vet.

Get a proper diagnosis and the right dose.

Finally, say no to pre-mixed medicated feeds.

Demand clean, drug-free feed.

A call to all Ghanaians
This isn’t just a farmer’s fight. It’s a national task.

Shoppers need to buy from clean sources.

The government has to stop over-the-counter sales of animal drugs.

And we have to give farmers affordable veterinary services.

That trotro scratch shouldn’t end in a funeral.

But if we want to save our drugs, we have to start treating them like the finite, precious tools they are.

The health of Ghana is decided in our farms.
