The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced that the August edition of the National Sanitation Day clean-up exercise will take place on Saturday, August 1, 2026, and has warned that strict enforcement measures will be applied to anyone who fails to comply with the directive.
In a statement, the Assembly said the exercise will run from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon across the capital. During this period, all trading activities, including shops, market stalls, tabletop businesses and street hawking, are expected to be suspended to allow residents and businesses to participate fully in the clean-up campaign.
According to the AMA, the exercise forms part of its ongoing efforts to improve environmental sanitation, reduce the risk of flooding and promote public health across the metropolis.
The clean-up will cover all sub-metros, electoral areas, markets, lorry parks, business districts and residential communities within Accra.
The Assembly explained that the day’s activities will focus on desilting drains, clearing blocked gutters and waterways, sweeping streets and public spaces, and removing accumulated refuse.
These activities are intended to improve drainage systems, particularly as the city continues to experience seasonal rains.
The AMA has called on traders, transport operators, market leaders, corporate institutions, organisations and residents to actively support the exercise by cleaning their surroundings, clearing drains, removing waste and ensuring that the frontages of their homes and businesses are tidy.
The Assembly stressed that this month’s exercise will be backed by strict law enforcement. It warned that individuals who ignore the directive, continue trading during the exercise, or obstruct sanitation officers and volunteers will face legal consequences.
According to the AMA, offenders may be arrested, fined, prosecuted before the sanitation court or sanctioned under the Assembly’s sanitation bye-laws.
