A fresh batch of Ghanaians stranded in South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks is expected to arrive in Ghana today, Saturday, July 25, as the government concludes the final phase of its mass evacuation exercise.
This operation forms part of a broader repatriation programme aimed at bringing home nearly 900 Ghanaian nationals who voluntarily requested to return due to growing concerns over their safety and livelihoods.
The evacuation follows earlier flights that successfully transported hundreds of Ghanaians back to the country, with authorities now completing the final stage of the exercise.
Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Quashie, announced the move on July 14, explaining that the repatriation was facilitated through the intervention of the Office of the President and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in response to concerns over the welfare of affected Ghanaians.
Mr Quashie disclosed that about 926 Ghanaians had already been repatriated during earlier phases, while the remaining registered individuals would be flown home from July 25.
“We are going to do the final repatriation of close to 900 Ghanaians who have voluntarily given their names here in South Africa that they want to go,” he said.
He added that flights would be arranged in phases until all registered Ghanaians were safely returned home.
According to the High Commissioner, the completion of the exercise will end the emergency evacuation programme, after which Ghanaians seeking assistance to return will be supported through regular consular services.
