Pep Guardiola has reportedly turned down an approach from the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) to become the next head coach of the Italy national team, choosing instead to take a break from football after a decade in charge of Manchester City.
According to reports, Italy made contact with Guardiola last week as they searched for a new manager.
However, the Spanish tactician declined the offer, explaining that he wants to focus on his personal life before considering another coaching role in the future.
The move comes after Carlo Ancelotti opted to remain as head coach of the Brazil national team, forcing Italian football officials to look elsewhere for a successor to lead the four-time FIFA World Cup winners.
Guardiola’s decision is said to have been influenced by the demands of his coaching career, having spent the last 10 years managing Manchester City.
During his time at the Premier League club, he transformed City into one of the most dominant teams in world football, winning multiple Premier League titles, domestic cups and the UEFA Champions League.
The 55-year-old is widely regarded as one of the greatest football managers in history. Before joining Manchester City in 2016, he enjoyed successful spells with Barcelona and Bayern Munich, collecting league titles and European honours while introducing an attractive, possession-based style of football that has influenced coaches around the world.
Although Guardiola has ruled out an immediate return to management, reports suggest he has not closed the door on coaching in the future and could consider a new challenge after taking time away from the game.
With Guardiola no longer an option, Italy have reportedly turned their attention to other experienced candidates.
Former AC Milan legends Paolo Maldini and Leonardo are believed to be involved in discussions over the appointment, with Andrea Pirlo, Roberto Mancini and Antonio Conte among the leading names under consideration.
Italy are eager to appoint a new coach as they seek to rebuild the national team and return to competing consistently for major international honours.
