Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney-General to discontinue the prosecution of a National Democratic Congress (NDC) organiser from the Agona West Constituency, insisting that he never filed a complaint or authorised any legal action against the individual.
In a statement issued by his office on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, Dr. Bawumia said he had become aware of the arrest and court appearance of the NDC organiser, who is facing charges of allegedly publishing false information and making offensive remarks about him.
According to the statement, Dr. Bawumia made it clear that he had no involvement in the decision to arrest or prosecute the young man. He stressed that he does not support the use of state institutions to punish citizens for expressing their opinions, even when those opinions are critical or offensive.
The former Vice President explained that throughout his years in public office, he has often been the target of insults, misinformation, and personal attacks. However, he has consistently chosen not to seek legal action against those responsible, maintaining that disagreements in a democracy should be addressed through dialogue and facts rather than criminal prosecution.
He stated that the appropriate response to false claims is to present the truth, while offensive speech should be answered with better speech instead of arrests, court appearances, or strict bail conditions.
Dr. Bawumia therefore appealed to the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney-General to withdraw the case against the NDC organiser and any similar prosecutions being pursued in his name. He also called for the immediate release of the accused so that he can return to his family and continue with his daily life.
The statement further emphasised that Ghana’s democracy thrives when citizens are free to express their views without fear of intimidation, regardless of their political affiliation.
Dr. Bawumia also said he forgives the young man and encouraged politicians across the political divide to focus on addressing the challenges facing Ghanaians instead of engaging in actions that could undermine freedom of expression.
