Italy have reportedly opened discussions with former Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola as they look to appoint him as the next head coach of the Azzurri.
The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has identified Guardiola as its preferred candidate to lead a major rebuild of the national team following years of disappointing results and struggles on the international stage.
Reports indicate that Italian football figures, including former AC Milan technical director Paolo Maldini and Brazilian football executive Leonardo Nascimento de Araújo, have held talks with Guardiola in Barcelona to present their plans and long-term vision for the national team.
The proposed project is believed to focus on restoring Italy’s status among the world’s leading football nations after a difficult period that has seen the four-time World Cup winners miss two consecutive World Cup tournaments.
Guardiola, widely regarded as one of the greatest managers of the modern era, is seen by Italian officials as the ideal figure to guide the next generation of Azzurri players because of his tactical knowledge, experience developing young talents, and record of success at club level.
The Spanish coach has enjoyed a remarkable career with clubs including Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City.
