Andy Appiah-Kubi says he is prepared to rejoin the legal team of Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, if he is invited to handle an appeal against the 20-year prison sentence imposed on the NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman in the Samreboi galamsey case.
Mr. Appiah-Kubi, who previously represented Chairman Wontumi during the trial, said he remains committed to ensuring justice is served and believes the case requires further legal examination at the appellate level.
He said he is only waiting for instructions from Chairman Wontumi or persons connected to him before taking up the matter again.
“If anybody connected to Chairman Wontumi or himself reinvites me for an appeal, I will do it. I am waiting for the instruction,” he said.
The lawyer also rejected suggestions that his withdrawal from the case during trial amounted to abandoning his client, explaining that his decision was based on the circumstances of the case at the time.
“I did not abandon my role as a lawyer in the case,” he stressed.
Mr. Appiah-Kubi further questioned the strength of the evidence used to convict Chairman Wontumi, arguing that the case raises broader concerns about the standard of proof required in criminal matters.
“I can put my life on the line that with this evidence and someone having been convicted for 20 years, what is the guarantee that if someone comes to say I have committed murder and there is no corroborative evidence, I won’t be jailed?” he questioned.
He indicated that he believes the matter presents important lessons for Ghana’s justice system and revealed plans to publish a book examining issues surrounding the country’s legal processes, using the Wontumi case as a reference point.
“I will write a book on Ghana’s justice system, and I will make it available for all Ghanaians to read and understand the issues,” he added.
