The Ashanti Democrats, a political and social advocacy group, has formally petitioned the Ashanti Regional Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to launch an independent investigation into allegations of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, in the Ahafo Ano South East District.
The petition, dated July 15, 2026, calls on the CID to conduct a thorough inquiry into claims that illegal mining activities are taking place in the district.
According to the group, an impartial investigation is necessary to establish the truth behind the allegations, strengthen public confidence in state institutions, and ensure that the rule of law is upheld.
The group believes the issue has generated significant public concern because of the environmental destruction often associated with illegal mining.
It noted that a credible investigation would help determine the facts while addressing concerns about the impact of galamsey on communities and natural resources.
Leading the delegation to present the petition was the President of the Ashanti Democrats, Jerry James Sukah.
He urged investigators to invite social media vlogger Amaru Shakur, who first made the allegations publicly, to assist with the investigation.
According to the petition, Shakur should be given the opportunity to provide any evidence, documents, or information that could support his claims and help investigators establish the facts surrounding the matter.
The Ashanti Democrats also pointed out that the Member of Parliament for Ahafo Ano South East, Mohammed Yakubu, and the District Chief Executive, Ibrahim Yamba-Nelson, have both publicly denied any involvement in the alleged illegal mining activities.
The group said these denials make it even more important for the CID to carry out an independent and comprehensive investigation to determine the truth and clear any doubts surrounding the allegations.
Speaking to journalists after submitting the petition, Mr. Sukah expressed confidence in the professionalism of the Ghana Police Service.
He said he expects the CID to treat the petition with urgency and conduct a fair, transparent, and unbiased investigation in line with the law.
