France and Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise will finish the 2026 FIFA World Cup as the tournament’s top assist provider after setting a new record for the most assists in a single World Cup.
The 24-year-old recorded seven assists during the tournament, breaking the previous record of six set by Brazil legend Pelé at the 1970 World Cup.
Olise made history during France’s 6-4 defeat to England in Saturday’s third-place playoff, where he provided two assists to move past Pelé’s 56-year-old record.
He is now the first player to register seven assists at a men’s World Cup since official assist records began in 1966.
Olise finished the tournament with seven assists in eight matches, helping France score 20 goals before they ended their campaign in fourth place.
Argentina captain Lionel Messi, Norway’s Martin Ødegaard, France captain Kylian Mbappé and Morocco’s Brahim Díaz are next on the assist chart with four assists each.
Although Messi can still add to his total in Sunday’s World Cup final against Spain, he can no longer match or overtake Olise’s tournament record.
Messi still holds the all-time World Cup assist record across all editions and could extend that record in the final.
Olise, however, has secured his place in World Cup history by ending one of the tournament’s longest-standing individual records.
