Spain were crowned FIFA World Cup champions after substitute Ferran Torres scored an extra-time winner to secure a 1-0 victory over 10-man defending champions Argentina on Sunday.
Torres struck early in the second half of extra time, calmly converting a rebound to hand the European champions their second World Cup title.
Argentina’s hopes suffered a major setback when Enzo Fernández was sent off after receiving a second yellow card in stoppage time at the end of normal play.
The defending champions struggled throughout the match, failing to register a single shot—on or off target—until the 115th minute.
The victory also saw Spain coach Luis de la Fuente, 65, become the oldest manager to win the FIFA World Cup.
Argentina captain Lionel Messi, 39, made history by becoming only the second player to appear in three World Cup finals. He also became the oldest outfield player ever to feature in a World Cup final.
