Fashion entrepreneur Osebo the Fashion King has shared his philosophy on music, saying he prefers songs with meaningful messages and life lessons over tracks focused solely on rhythm and entertainment.
Speaking on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz, Osebo explained that the lyrics of a song determine whether he continues listening or skips it.
“I’m saying this because it’s my point of view. Every piece of music I listen to teaches me something, so I don’t listen to music that doesn’t make sense,” he said.
According to him, music is more than entertainment, as he believes every song should offer wisdom, inspiration or a valuable lesson.
“That’s why I say there’s wisdom in gospel music, there’s wisdom in funeral songs, and many highlife songs carry gospel-like messages. It’s the words in a song that make me eager to listen to it,” he added.
The fashion entrepreneur said he is particularly drawn to gospel, funeral and traditional highlife songs because of their rich lyrical content.
“If I’m playing a song I’ve never heard before and I don’t hear any sensible advice in it, I skip it,” he said.
Osebo noted that meaningful lyrics, rather than just catchy melodies, are what make songs memorable to him.
“I even dance to funeral songs. I can listen to them while crying and still be nodding my head. I love Awoyo songs,” he added.
He revealed his admiration for Awoyo funeral songs, explaining that although they evoke sadness and deep emotions, their powerful messages make them enjoyable.
“Sometimes the music gets deep inside me—it’s almost like a spirit. That’s just who I am. I can play one particular song for an entire month,” he said.
Comparing older and contemporary music, Osebo argued that songs from the past carried stronger moral lessons and practical advice than many modern tracks.
“The wisdom and advice in the songs from the olden days are different from the kind of music many people make today,” he said.
He believes many current songs place more emphasis on entertainment and rhythm than meaningful storytelling.
