Go to Nana Addo for water! – Private water retailers defy gov’t order
Some private water retailers in Teshie, a suburb of Accra, have defied government’s directives on absorbing water bills for the next three months.
They insist on payment from people who fetch water from them, defying the government’s order to give free water as it suspends the payment of water bill for the next three months.
According to some retailers, the move would deprive them of their daily bread as they relied on the sale of water for their livelihood, so they have simply decided to cease operations.
Coronavirus: Gov’t absorbs water bills for the next three months – Akufo-Addo
The residents said water retailers had been their source of potable water until the government announced the suspension of bills for the next three months.
According to them, the decision by retailers to cease operation would affect the hand-washing protocols encouraged bythe government to fight the spread of the virus.
“We still pay for the water, just as how we use to; they won’t allow you to fetch if you don’t pay…. they say it is not Nana Addo who fixed the pump for them.” A resident narrated to Joy News in a report, monitored by theghanareport.com
In his fifth address to the nation, President Nana Akufo-Addo announced a three months water bill reprieve for all as the government intensify its fight against the deadly coronavirus.
“Furthermore, the government will absorb the water bills for all Ghanaians for the next three months that is April, May and June”.
But some water retailers in the country have raised strong objections to that directive
“Our major problem now is having access to water, they insist on taking money even when the president has announced it should be for free, some tell us to go to Nana Addo’s office for water”
I don’t see newsmen educating people on key issues when people they interview show ignorance. Are you journalist only interested in the bad effect of policies or educating the masses? Sometimes it’s obvious people do not understand by-laws and other official directives but newsmen will not correct them but rather carry the bad mindset to the rest of the country thereby endorsing impunity. Relaying bad attitudes is not news and won’t help Ghana and yourselves
You so right Nana …is this news? Always posting irrelevant issues
This is an issue that needs redress, and people shouldn’t wash it to the gutters. Are we then saying that these water retailers are really not supposed to be engaged by government on his intention to do what he’s doing to fight the deadly Corona virus, especially knowing very well that a good number source their water from these retailers??
Let’s call a spade, a spade and not a big spoon.
My heart beats faster than it should be when it’s come to the issue of urgency as a nation, the is no one in charge, no collaboration logistically no! Instead of fighting the pandemic we rather spreading it to the corners of the country. Politics has taken the center stage in the event of war call it a pandemic, how horrible can one be, if not the enemy within.
Even if the government is able to commandeer all water tankers, is it logistically possible to get water to all water deprived areas? Until then, such areas will have a choice of either paying for water or having no water because the retailers choose to lock their taps.
