Fuel tanker, tipper truck crash sparks fire on Accra–Tema motorway

A fatal accident involving a fuel tanker and a tipper truck has resulted in a massive fire outbreak on the Accra–Tema Motorway, leaving at least one person dead and others in critical condition.

The crash reportedly occurred when the two heavy-duty vehicles collided head-on along the busy stretch of the motorway, triggering an intense blaze that quickly engulfed both vehicles.

Eyewitnesses say the impact caused an immediate fireball, sending thick smoke into the air and forcing motorists in the area to flee for safety as the flames spread rapidly across parts of the roadway.

Emergency responders, including personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service and the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), rushed to the scene to battle the inferno and prevent it from spreading to other vehicles.

Firefighters battled for several minutes to bring the situation under control as traffic along the Accra–Tema corridor came to a complete standstill. The motorway was temporarily closed in sections while rescue and recovery operations continued.

Although official confirmation on the full number of casualties is still pending, preliminary reports from eyewitness accounts and local media indicate that at least one person has died, while others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Authorities have begun investigations to determine the exact cause of the crash, including whether speeding, brake failure, or wrongful overtaking contributed to the collision.

Further updates are expected as emergency services complete their assessment and clear the wreckage from the motorway.
