The Spanish national team has found an emotional source of inspiration as they continue preparations for the FIFA World Cup, with players paying tribute to María Caamaño, the young football fan who captured the hearts of the nation during her courageous battle with cancer.
Upon arriving at their World Cup training camp, Spain’s players were surprised to find a large photograph of María displayed at their hotel.
The touching gesture served as a reminder of the special bond she shared with the team and the impact she had on Spanish football.
María, who passed away in April at the age of 13 after a six-year battle with Ewing sarcoma, became a symbol of courage and resilience in Spain.
Throughout her illness, she maintained a close relationship with members of the national team, who regularly offered support and encouragement during her treatment.
Known affectionately as the “Football Warrior Princess,” María’s love for the sport touched many people.
One of the most memorable moments of her life came in 2024 when she joined Spain’s players during the celebrations following their UEFA Euro 2024 triumph.
She was invited onto the stage in Madrid and even lifted the European Championship trophy alongside the players, creating an unforgettable image that resonated across the country.
Spain won Euro 2024 after defeating England 2-1 in the final, securing a record fourth European title.
The memory of María remains strong within the squad. Midfielder Álex Baena shared a photo of her image at the team’s hotel and wrote that there are now “27” members in camp instead of 26, suggesting that María’s spirit is still part of the team.
“I know she will be with us, and we hope to bring her the trophy,” Baena said.
The tribute has added extra motivation to a Spanish side already considered one of the favourites for the World Cup. For the players, the tournament is about more than football.
It is also an opportunity to honour a young girl whose bravery inspired a nation.
As Spain begins its quest for global glory, María Caamaño’s memory will travel with the team every step of the way.
For many within the squad, every victory will be dedicated to the young supporter who never stopped fighting and never stopped believing.
