Bawku Naba backs Otumfuo peace plan

The Paramount Chief of the Kusaug Traditional Area, Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II, has called on the Nayiri of Mamprugu, Naa Mahami Bohagu Abdulai, to review his stance on the peace efforts aimed at resolving the protracted Bawku conflict.

At a media briefing in Bawku, the chief appealed for support for the mediation process spearheaded by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

He said all parties must put the interests of the people first and work towards restoring calm in the area.

His remarks come in the wake of the Nayiri’s decision not to accept the recommendations from the mediation process.

The Nayiri has also maintained his recognition of Alhaji Abagre Seidu as the rightful Bawku Naba, a position that continues to deepen divisions surrounding the chieftaincy dispute.

The unresolved disagreement has kept tensions high in Bawku and affected neighbouring areas in the North East Region.

Residents in communities including Walewale and Nasia continue to grapple with insecurity and uncertainty.

Naba Azoka II expressed concern about the human cost of the conflict, stressing that many people have spent years living in fear.

He urged leaders to think about the daily struggles of families whose movement, businesses, and livelihoods have been disrupted by recurring violence.

He argued that embracing the outcome of the mediation process would open a new chapter for the area.

In his view, genuine peace would allow residents to focus on rebuilding their communities and creating better opportunities for future generations.

The press conference carried special significance because it was the first time in nearly three years that the Bawku Naba had publicly addressed the media from his palace.

He further appealed to those involved in the conflict to abandon violence and commit themselves to meaningful dialogue.

According to him, lasting solutions can only emerge through understanding, compromise, and reconciliation.

The traditional ruler concluded by calling for stronger collaboration among community leaders, government authorities, and residents.

He said unity and mutual respect remain essential for restoring stability and driving development across Bawku and its surrounding areas.
