Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has reassured Ghanaians that the nation’s esteemed Black Queens are secure and in good health while they are in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
In a Facebook update on Sunday, March 1, Ablakwa stated that he had directly communicated with the leadership of the team and verified their well-being.
He also mentioned that Ghana’s diplomatic mission in the UAE has been diligently providing consular assistance to the squad.
“In this turbulent moment, the safety and welfare of all Ghanaians, particularly those currently in the Middle East, remains our utmost priority,” he said.
This statement is made in light of increasing tensions in the region, with several nations, including Qatar and Kuwait, reportedly shutting down their airspace following a series of military actions and retaliatory strikes.
Reports had indicated that members of Ghana’s senior women’s national football team, the Black Queens, were stranded due to the unrest.
The team arrived in Dubai on February 25 to take part in the Pink Ladies Cup, a four-nation invitational tournament that is part of the international women’s football schedule.
The Ghanaian delegation, which includes 25 players and 16 officials, is currently staying at Four Points by Sheraton in Sharjah, close to Dubai. Team officials have advised players to pack their belongings as a precaution while they await further instructions.
