Experienced Ghanaian actor, Fred Amugi, has revealed that his journey into acting began in 1969 on the theatre stage, a foundation he says has shaped him into the actor Ghanaians admire today.

According to the celebrated performer, the discipline and intensity of stage acting played a crucial role in developing his craft and defining how audiences perceive him.

“I started acting in 1969 on stage, and the stage is what has shaped me into what I am and how people see me now,” he said.

Speaking on the Afternoon Show on TV3 on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, Fred Amugi explained that, unlike film acting, stage performance demands constant alertness and precision, as there are no second chances once the curtain rises.

“On stage, you have to be alert all the time. You can’t afford to mess up your lines. Unlike film, where there’s an opportunity to cut, correct mistakes, and retake your lines, you can’t do that on stage,” he noted.

He emphasized that performing live before an audience sharpens both the mind and emotions of an actor.

“Every time you’re on stage, it opens your mind and heart to what you’re doing because you’re live, and your audience is right there with you. That alone motivates you to always give your best.”

Despite decades of experience, the veteran actor says he is never fully satisfied with his performances.

“I don’t remember watching myself in my last production and telling myself I was satisfied. Every time, I feel that if I were given another chance, I would do it better. That’s what keeps me going,” he added.

When asked whether he has ever forgotten his stage lines, Amugi responded candidly, admitting that it is part of the theatrical experience.
