Three persons are currently in police custody following the interception of two trucks carrying 152 bales of dried leaves, which are suspected to be narcotics, by officers in the Western Region.
This operation also resulted in the arrest of two suspects who allegedly attempted to bribe the officers with GH¢69,000 to secure the release of the vehicles.
The incident took place on February 22, 2026, at approximately 5:20 p.m., when officers stationed at the Assorkor barrier near Shama halted a Kia Rhino truck with the registration number GE 8965-12.
The truck was found to be loaded with the suspected narcotics. Before the officers could take control of the situation, the occupants abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene.
Subsequently, Mr. Moses Kwaku Tawiah, aged 44, returned to the barrier and identified himself as being associated with the truck.
He informed the officers that the vehicle belonged to his brother and requested its release. The police arrested him immediately.
During questioning, Mr. Tawiah revealed to investigators that he was responsible for a second truck, a gold Hyundai with the registration number GS 3368-17.
He stated that this vehicle, which was also loaded with similar substances, had been parked at a block factory in Nkroful near Sekondi.
The police followed him to the specified location and discovered the truck as described.
Investigators reported that each of the 152 bales contained approximately 80 slabs of a compressed substance believed to be narcotic drugs.
At around 2:00 a.m. on February 23, 2026, two additional men, Mr. Isaac Kwame Kontor, aged 44, and Mr. Kwabena Forson, aged 55, arrived at the Assorkor barrier carrying GH¢69,000 in cash.
The police stated that the two men attempted to offer the money in exchange for the release of the trucks. Officers accepted the cash as evidence and subsequently arrested them.
All three suspects are currently in custody, cooperating with the ongoing investigations.
The two trucks have been seized, and the GH¢69,000 has been retained as evidence.
In a statement released on Tuesday, February 25, 2026, the Western Regional Police Command affirmed its commitment to combating drug trafficking and related offences within the region.
