3 arrested over Obrachire student assault

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has confirmed the arrest of three students who were involved in the assault on a student from Obrachire Senior High Technical School during the district inter-schools athletics competition, which was disrupted by students from the Swedru School of Business (SWESBUS).

The Central Regional Director of Education, Dr. Juliette Dufie Otami, provided this update in an interview.

“We are working with the Police; they made about three arrests as of yesterday. That is the information I have gathered. Whether they are students or not is one of the things we are investigating. Because when these things happen, you will likely find town boys involved,” she stated.

The altercation reportedly took place in Agona Swedru on Thursday, February 19, when tensions between the students of the two schools escalated into a physical fight. This incident disrupted the event and raised significant concerns regarding the safety of students, staff, and spectators.

Previously, GES had released a statement expressing profound concern over the situation, emphasising that such incidents undermine the spirit of healthy competition and pose risks to all participants.

In light of the circumstances, the Central Regional Directorate of GES has mandated the immediate suspension of all zonal inter-school sporting activities among Senior High Schools (SHSs) and Senior High Technical Schools (SHTSs) in the region, pending a comprehensive investigation.
