Veteran highlife artist Ben Brako has revealed that he has been incorrectly labeled as ‘anti-Christ’ because of the traditional themes present in his renowned song Etuei.
Speaking in an interview, the seasoned musician stated that he frequently finds himself needing to clarify the true meaning of the song to those who misinterpret its message.
When questioned if he has ever explained the song’s meaning to others, Ben Brako mentioned that some listeners presume he opposes Christianity due to the song’s references to traditional beliefs.
“Yes, those who know think that I’m anti-Christ. They believe that anything to do with the traditional religion is anti-Christ,” he stated in an interview monitored by The Ghana Report on Channel One TV.
In response to whether such opinions were held by educated individuals, the highlife artist confirmed this.
“Oh yes, especially the educated people, because they have been indoctrinated more about it,” he remarked.
Ben Brako, however, emphasized that Etuei was never meant to advocate anti-Christian sentiments but rather to enlighten people about Ghanaian culture and traditions.
“But it’s just educating people on the culture and the traditions. It’s very important,” he clarified.
He further explained that the song conveys a profound message regarding identity and self-awareness.
“When you listen to the lyrics, we are saying that you’re not satisfied with yourself and so ‘Etuei’ simply means ‘Let us go back to ourselves, let us be ourselves,’” he added.
