Two units restored at Akosombo after fire – Energy Minister

The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has announced that two power generation units at the Ghana Grid Company’s Akosombo Substation are now working again after a recent fire caused major disruptions to electricity supply in parts of the country.

The fire damaged important control systems at the facility, which affected power transmission from the Akosombo area and led to outages in several places.

Giving an update, the Energy Minister, John Jinapor, said engineers worked quickly to fix the problem and restore some of the lost power.

He explained that one unit was repaired and brought back on Sunday, and the second unit is now also producing electricity. Work is still ongoing to fix the third unit.

“We are working hard to bring the remaining unit back as soon as possible,” he said.

The minister added that engineers are still on-site, working continuously to complete repairs and stabilise the power system.

He assured the public that the government is doing everything it can to fully restore the electricity supply soon.

According to him, more units are expected to come back online in the coming days, which will help improve the stability of the national grid and make power supply more reliable.

For now, restoring the two units is expected to reduce some of the pressure on the system while work continues on the remaining repairs.
