NUGS petitions rent control over hostel prices

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has taken a bold step to address the growing concerns of students across the country by officially petitioning the Rent Control Department over the alarming rise in hostel accommodation fees.

In a move that reflects the frustration of many students, NUGS is calling for urgent intervention and strict enforcement of the Rent Act.

According to the union, the continuous increase in hostel prices around tertiary institutions is becoming unbearable, making it difficult for many students to secure decent and affordable accommodation.

Students have long complained about landlords demanding exorbitant fees, often requiring advance payments that stretch beyond what many can afford.

For some, this has meant staying in overcrowded rooms, far from campus, or even deferring their education altogether.

NUGS, in its petition, emphasised that education should not be a privilege only for those who can afford high rent.

The union is urging the Rent Control Department to step in, regulate pricing, and ensure landlords comply with existing laws meant to protect tenants.

“We cannot sit back while students struggle to find a place to sleep,” a representative from NUGS stated. “This is not just about rent it’s about access to education and the wellbeing of Ghanaian students.”

The union is also encouraging students to report unfair rental practices and support the push for accountability within the housing sector.

As many await a response from the Rent Control Department, students across the country are hopeful that this petition will lead to real action and ultimately, some relief.
