President John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians that the recent power outages being experienced across parts of the country are not a return of the dreaded “dumsor,” but rather a result of ongoing upgrades to the national electricity distribution system.
Speaking during an engagement on power sector improvements, the president explained that the interruptions are planned and necessary to enhance the reliability and stability of the electricity supply.
He stressed that the current situation should not be mistaken for the prolonged power crisis that previously plagued the country.
“We will make sure that your lights stay on and that we do not have dumsor,” he assured, while calling for public patience as the works continue.
According to him, the government is undertaking a nationwide exercise to replace ageing and overloaded transformers, many of which have been in operation for decades and can no longer meet the increasing demand for electricity due to population growth and expanding communities.
He noted that in several areas, outdated infrastructure has led to unstable supply, making the upgrade unavoidable.
The president explained that installing new transformers and other equipment requires temporary shutdowns, as these systems cannot be replaced while electricity is still flowing.
These controlled outages, he indicated, are therefore a necessary step toward achieving a more stable and efficient power distribution network.
Energy sector officials have supported this position, explaining that the ongoing works form part of a broader strategy to strengthen the country’s electricity infrastructure and address long-standing distribution challenges.
The intervention includes the replacement of faulty equipment, the expansion of distribution networks, and the improvement of maintenance systems to prevent future disruptions.
Mahama reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring a reliable power supply, emphasising that the measures being implemented are designed to eliminate persistent outages and improve service delivery nationwide.
He urged the public to remain calm and cooperate with authorities, assuring that the temporary inconvenience would result in long-term benefits.
