GTEC blacklists 62 unrecognised institutions, warns public against fake certificates

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has released a list of 62 institutions that are not recognised in Ghana, warning the public to be cautious about certificates issued by them due to quality concerns.

In a notice published on Friday, April 17, 2026, GTEC identified universities, colleges, and seminaries from both Ghana and abroad, advising students, parents, and employers not to engage with them.

According to the Commission, this move is part of its efforts to protect the credibility of Ghana’s higher education system and prevent the use of unaccredited or questionable qualifications.

Some of the listed institutions operate within Ghana, including Debest College of Science, Arts and Business; Faith University Seminary; Doxa Open University; Quest International University; Kingdom Living Bible Institute in Kumasi; and Global Professional College in Effiduase. GTEC says their presence locally is especially concerning, as they may be recruiting students without proper accreditation.

The list also includes several international institutions such as Universidad Azteca (Mexico), Atlantic International University (USA), Selinus University (Italy), and Texila American University (Guyana), among others. A number of Bible colleges and seminaries were also named.

Although GTEC did not detail specific issues with each institution, it indicated that they may lack proper accreditation, fall below required standards, or operate with questionable academic practices.

The Commission warned that qualifications from these institutions may not be accepted for further education, public sector jobs, or professional licensing in Ghana.

Employers are encouraged to verify applicants’ credentials, while prospective students are advised to confirm the accreditation status of any institution before enrolling.

The directive takes immediate effect.
