Levi Colwill will play for Chelsea’s under-21s on Friday as he steps up his recovery from an anterior cruciate ligament injury and could return to action before the end of the season.
The 23-year-old centre-back underwent surgery on his knee last August and has been a big miss for Chelsea this season at the back.
Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior hopes he can be back playing with the first team this season but is taking a cautious approach with Colwill’s return.
Asked if Colwill might feature in one of his squads this season, Rosenior said on Thursday: “Hoping so. I think Levi will play some minutes for the U21s tomorrow, which is fantastic for him.
“When you have a long-term injury such is the extent of Levi’s injury you need a long rehab period and I want to make sure he is 100 per cent right in terms of match fitness before we consider him for selection for our first-team.”
