GJA condemns assault on journalist at Kukurantumi

The Eastern Regional Branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has denounced what it described as a violent attack on Peace FM’s Eastern Regional Correspondent, Michael Akrofi, allegedly perpetrated by a police officer at the Tafo–Kukurantumi Formed Police Unit (FPU) base.

According to GJA, the incident reportedly took place while the journalist was legally covering a demonstration by farmers at Kukurantumi in the Eastern Region. The protest was organised to highlight the devastation of farmlands caused by Fulani herdsmen and their cattle.

A statement released on Monday, January 12, by Stephen Ampem Darko Koranteng, the Eastern Regional GJA Chairman, indicates that Mr. Akrofi was allegedly assaulted from behind by a police officer, who choked him on three separate occasions and subsequently issued threats following the attack.

The journalist later reported experiencing severe pain in his neck, back, and waist, necessitating medical attention at a healthcare facility.

GJA observed that the incident has since been officially reported to the Eastern Regional Police Command. However, the GJA remarked that at the time of issuing its statement, the victim had not received any formal response or feedback from the police.

The Association characterised the incident as “barbaric and unprofessional”, emphasising that it represents a direct assault on press freedom and the constitutional rights of journalists to operate without fear, intimidation, or violence.

The GJA underscored the vital role that journalists play in informing the public, especially during high-tension events such as protests, and asserted that they should be safeguarded by security forces rather than subjected to mistreatment.

Consequently, the Association has urged the Inspector-General of Police and the Eastern Regional Police Command to promptly investigate the incident and ensure that the officer involved is identified and addressed in accordance with legal standards.

The GJA called for enhanced cooperation between journalists and security agencies, highlighting that mutual respect, clarity of responsibilities, and adherence to professional standards are crucial for maintaining public order while protecting press freedom and democratic principles.

“The GJA stands in solidarity with affected journalists and assures all media practitioners that it will persist in advocating for their safety and rights. We will closely monitor the handling of this case and take all necessary measures to ensure that justice is achieved,” the statement concluded.
