An Emirates Airbus A380 flying from Dubai to São Paulo diverted to Kotoka International Airport in Accra after a smoke indication was detected in the aircraft’s cargo hold, aviation sources have confirmed.
The aircraft landed safely at KIA, where standard safety procedures were activated to allow checks on the aircraft.
The diversion was described as a precautionary step taken in the interest of safety.
Landings by the Airbus A380, the world’s largest passenger aircraft, are rare in Accra.
This incident marks only the third time an A380 has landed at Kotoka International Airport and the second involving an Emirates aircraft. The first Emirates A380 arrival in Accra occurred in October 2018.
As of the time of filing this report, Emirates Airlines had not issued an official update on the cause of the smoke alert or when the flight would continue to its final destination.
