Minority Caucus demands immediate reversal of tariff increases

The Minority Caucus in Parliament is demanding that the government reverse the recent increases in electricity and water tariffs, describing the adjustments as an added burden on already struggling households and businesses.

At a press conference on Monday, December 8, 2025, Ranking Member on the Energy Committee, George Kwame Aboagye, said the new tariffs amount to an unfair blow to citizens whose incomes have not kept pace with rising costs.

The increases, which generally reflect about 9% for electricity and more than 15% for water, have sparked public frustration, especially as they offset the modest rise in the 2026 minimum wage.

Aboagye said the Minority will use every legitimate parliamentary tool to push back against the hikes and ensure the concerns of ordinary Ghanaians are heard.

He insisted that the tariff adjustments represent exploitation and fail to consider the difficult economic climate.

“Ghanaians deserve relief, not repeated shocks. They deserve leadership, not exploitation, and as a Minority Caucus, we will continue to hold this government accountable and defend the rights of the people,” he said.

According to Aboagye, the Opposition’s stance goes beyond press engagements.

He stressed that motions, urgent questions and demands for special debates are all options the Minority is ready to pursue to hold the government and the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission accountable.

The Caucus highlighted the real impact of utility inflation. For households, the combined effect of water and electricity increases erodes purchasing power, especially against the backdrop of the modest wage adjustment.

For small businesses and industries, higher operating costs threaten jobs and weaken competitiveness in an already challenging economic environment.

The Minority says it will continue acting as a firm voice for Ghanaians affected by what it describes as harmful economic decisions.
