Bono East Region: Remove speed ramps on Atebubu–Kajaji road – Drivers

Story By: Salome Sakyi

Drivers and commuters on the Atebubu–Kajaji road in the Bono East Region have raised concerns over the proliferation of illegal speed ramps and tables along the 45-kilometre stretch, warning that the unapproved structures pose serious safety risks.

According to road users, many of the ramps were haphazardly constructed without warning signs, making them particularly dangerous at night.

The road, which connects several communities in Bono East to parts of the Oti Region, is already in poor condition, but the addition of these illegal ramps has made travel even more hazardous.

Communities reported to have erected the speed ramps include Kajaji, Bodinka, Beposo, Bassa, Kyeame Krom, Kofi Djan, Drobe, and Lemu.

Under the Ghana Highway Authority Act, 1997 (Act 540), only the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) is empowered to construct speed ramps.

Yet, some residents have taken it upon themselves to erect these structures, allegedly to control speeding.

Local driver, Salue Gariba expressed frustration over the damage to vehicles and the risk to motorists.

“From Krachi to Kumasi, most vehicles here are SsangYong, and their oil bases often get damaged because of the many illegal speed ramps.

Some are even built on curves, causing several accidents, yet the number keeps increasing,” he lamented.

A Commuter, Joseph Mensah also appealed to authorities to intervene.

“It is surprising that people do not seek permission from the Highway Authority. It is their responsibility to grant approval before these things are erected,” he said.

Efforts to reach officials of the Ghana Highways Authority and the National Road Safety Authority in the Bono East Region for comment were unsuccessful.
