Adjiriganor: Trial of man accused of stabbing firefighter set for December 17

The Achimota Circuit Court will on December 17, 2025, begin the trial of Sampson Azumah, a 21-year-old man accused of stabbing a firefighter at Adjiriganor.

Azumah is alleged to have stabbed the firefighter with a screwdriver after water used to douse a fire splashed on him. He has been charged with causing harm and has pleaded not guilty.

At a Case Management Conference on December 3, 2025, the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Emmanuel Addo, informed the court that three witness statements had been filed and served on the accused, who is not represented by a lawyer.

The trial judge directed Azumah to ensure the statements were read and explained to him. When he asked who would do so, the judge ordered the court Registrar to ensure the statements were explained before the next adjourned date.

The prosecution said the complainant is Leslie Adjie Tetteh, a fire officer based in Teshie, while Azumah is unemployed and resides at Adjiriganor, East Legon.

According to the prosecution, on November 14, 2025, at about 11:30 p.m., Tetteh, who is stationed at the Ghana National Fire Service headquarters, was part of a team responding to a fire outbreak at the residence of Yvonne Okoro at Adjiriganor.

The court heard that several bystanders gathered at the scene, with some allegedly throwing stones at the firefighters.

After the fire was brought under control, and while Tetteh was packing up a hose, he was allegedly attacked by Azumah, who accused him of deliberately splashing water on him.

Azumah is said to have pulled a concealed screwdriver from his waist bag, stabbed the complainant in the left arm, and fled the scene.

Tetteh was rushed to the hospital for treatment, after which the incident was reported to the East Legon Police. A medical form was issued for further care.

On November 17, 2025, Azumah was arrested. The prosecution said he admitted committing the offence, and the screwdriver was retrieved.

For his part, the Greater Accra Regional Chief Fire Officer, Rashid Nisawu, said the Ghana National Fire Service would continue to attend court proceedings and was determined to pursue the case to its logical conclusion.

He noted that failing to do so could cause the public to take the Service for granted.
