Akufo-Addo announces closure of all borders

President Nana Akufo-Addo has announced a closure of all Ghana’s borders effective Sunday midnight following increasing coronavirus infections.

In his third address to the nation in ten days, the President also announced a mandatory quarantine for travelers found at the borders after the closure kicks in.

He said the border closures does not apply to goods and cargo.

The president had already banned public gatherings as part of measures to contain the spread of the deadly virus.

Since the ban was put in place, Ghana’s cases have soared to 21, including a first death recorded Saturday March 21, 2020.

He reiterated earlier admonitions to Ghanaians to observe personal hygiene and avoid “unnecessary contact.”

“I am pleading with each and everyone of you comply with these measures,” he said.

He explained Ghana’s five broad objectives in fighting covid-19 are to limit the infections, contain the situation, provide adequate care and limit the socio-economic impact of the global pandemic.

The government’s final objective is to use the pandemic to inspire self-reliance and local production.
