EC puts district assembly and unit committee by-elections on hold

The Electoral Commission has announced the postponement of all scheduled District Assembly and Unit Committee by-elections until further notice.

The decision, communicated in a brief public notice on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, affects local-level elections across the country.

In the statement, the Commission reassured the public that updates on the rescheduled dates will be provided in due course.

“The Electoral Commission wishes to inform the general public that the District Assembly and Unit Committee By-Elections have been put on hold until further notice,” the notice said.

The Commission added, “New dates will be announced in due course,” signalling that stakeholders should await further communication before making plans.

No detailed explanation was offered regarding the reason for the postponement.

The announcement comes as communities and political stakeholders had been preparing for the by-elections, which are key to filling vacant positions in District Assemblies and Unit Committees.

The EC’s decision means that candidates and voters will need to adjust their schedules and monitor official channels for new election dates.

The Electoral Commission has urged all political parties, candidates, and the general public to stay alert to official updates and prepare accordingly once the new dates are announced.
